NORTH AMERICA – 1753 KEY = French forts The most serious threat to England in North America came from France To protect their land claims, France built an extensive system of forts. These forts blocked the English colonies from expanding to the west.

At first, most English settlers were content to stay along the Atlantic coast but, by the 1740’s English traders crossed the Appalachian Mts. into the Ohio River Valley in search of furs The French had established a successful fur trade with the natives
