Reading Lesson #1 What are the habits of an active ( as opposed to passive) reader? Agenda: 1. Read some pictures. 2. Lesson Notes: What are active readers doing? How can I show my teacher I am reading actively? 3. Paired Exercise 4. Individual Exercise

Reading Pictures Exercise 1: The Group Directions: 1) Look at the picture. 2) Don’t talk….just notice your thoughts. 3) Write down three thoughts you had. 4) Turn and talk to person near you…DO NOT leave anyone out!

Note your thoughts as you examine this picture. Write them down.

Lesson 2: Why do we annotate?  To annotate is to make notes about what you are reading.  Reading to learn demands a strategic approach like annotating.  We now know good readers stop and think.  These thoughts become the annotations.  The annotations become fuel for response to text.  They will lead you to detailed writing that discusses aspects of the text that matter to your response.

Practice………Annotate ( make notes) about your thinking about this image. Which details matter? Q= Ask questions about aspects of the text. C= Make connections ( T-T, T-S, T-W) to support understanding I= Infer meaning (Read between the lines….in this case figure out what a detail might mean) Conc= Draw a conclusion about the image. R= Respond personally to the text. Notice this feeling.

Follow Up  The Afghan Girl – Before and Later

Your turn:  "Christine's World" by Andrew Wyeth  _World _World  Questions- Write a one paragraph response to this famous picture. What do you see going on in this picture? Which details contribute to this impression?

Homework 1) Find an interesting image ( action shot, painting, photo, print ad, frame from a movie,,,) 2) Print off 4 copies of it. 3) Stop and think about it. Ask: What meaning can make from this? 4) Annotate it and prepare to present your observations and response to it in a small group. 5) ALSO- Get a hard cover book and start looking for a novel to begin working with on Friday!
