Datafication Based on Chapter 5 of book “Big Data” a revolution will transform how we live, work and think Written by: Viktor Mayer-Schonberger and Kenneth Cukier Student: Masood Maldar Lappeenranta University of Technology 19 February 2015

Key Concepts: Data: a description of something that allows it to be recognized, recorded and analyzed. to Datafy a phenomenon : is to put it in a quantified format so it can be tabulated and analyzed. to datafy, to capture quantifiable information Datafication is unearthing data from materials that no one thought held any value.

Unlikeliest Places Case 1: pathfinder of seas, Matthew Maury, Us Navy officer, 1855, one of pioneers of Datafication, Retrieved information from old logbooks and try a new navigational charts by extracting and tabulating them. Case 2: anti-theft systems in car based on the way somebody is seated, Professor Koshimizu, took sth. that had never treated as data and transformed it to numerically quantified format and create unique value.

Datafication and Digitization are different Digitization is the process of converting analog information into zeros and ones so computers can handle it. Digitization turbocharges Datafication. Digitizing makes Datafying vastly more efficient and enables mathematical analysis of data to uncover its hidden value.

Words Become Data Book domain is where both digitization and datafication have happened. Google Book Project: every page, every book, every one, every where, freely Started 2004, after 8 years, in 2012 had scanned 20 million titles which is more than 15% of the world’s whole written book from mid-fifteenth century First step: Digitization (solid high resolution digital images) Main step(challenge): Datafication (datafied text makes it index able, searchable, analyzable ) Amazon in the same way but mostly focus on digitizing new titles.

Locations as Data Quickly, cheeply and without any specialized instrument we can measure every quare inch of area on Earth. GPS, sensors and wireless modules are used in Google, Microsoft and Apple devices to trace People and Object. Reveal trends: to predict the problem and correct it before the user realize that there is something wrong Reality Mining: processing huge amounts of data from moblie phones to make interpretations and predictions about human behaviours.

Interactions become data The idea of datafication is the backbone of many social media companies. Datafication is not only rendering attitudes into analyzable form but also human behaviour also. Facebook datafy our Relationships Tweeter datafy Emotions and Thoughts LinkedIn datafy our long past professional Experiences.

Datafying everything: We’re datafying everything which is under Sun. Seeing the world as information, as ocean of data thatcan be explored at greater breadth and depth.
