Laying the Foundation: Using the NY Curriculum Modules as a Foundation for CCSS-aligned Instruction

2 Live NTI We will be live tweeting throughout the week! Follow us: Join in the fun and use this hashtag: #NTIny

Purpose of this Session Participants will be able to:  Identify key structures and design features that form the foundation of strong CCSS-aligned curriculum.  Explain how the curriculum modules reflect (and support teachers to implement) the instructional shifts. 3

Critical Questions for this Session How can the CCSS modules support teachers to develop rigorous instructional experiences? How was the curriculum designed with rigor in mind? How does Module 9.1 create opportunities for rigor? 4

Overview of a Module Texts:  Unit 1: “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves” by Karen Russell  Unit 2: Excerpts from Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, and excerpts from Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke  Unit 3: Excerpts from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare Number of lessons in the module:  53 (including module performance task) 5

Investigating a Module 6 Lesson (pp. 1-5) How do you find the standards, vocabulary, and assessment information for a lesson? What does the teacher need to do to begin the lesson? How do you know what vocabulary is taught in the lesson? How much text does the lesson deal with and how do you know? Module Assessments How do the assessments reflect the expectations of particular standard(s)? What skills do they measure? How do they build over time?

Investigating a Module 7 Prefatory Material How do the modules approach homework and accountable independent reading?

EngageNY.org Demo How do you find and download the module materials? What other HS ELA curriculum modules are available? What are your options for downloading them? 8

Reflection and Closing Discuss in groups:  Which structures and features of the modules provide a foundation for strong CCSS-aligned instruction?  How do the modules support teachers to implement the instructional shifts and standards?  What steps might you need to take in order to support teachers or prepare for implementation (depending on your role)? 9
