Ancient Greek Architecture HW Answers

Greek Architecture Temples – built as beautiful dwelling places for gods / goddesses instead of places of worship Temples were designed to show the importance of order and balance in Greek society

Column Styles Doric – Simple, no base, got thinner towards the top Ionic – thinner than Doric, sat on a base, spirals carved on top Corinthian – most complex design, leaf carvings on top

The Parthenon The Athenians build three temples to honor Athena with the most important being the Parthenon It had 8 columns each on the front & back and 17 on each side Slanted roof creating triangles known as pediments on front & back Sculptures at top – frieze, each sculpture - metopes

Sculptures and statues Sculptors would set up a workshop near where the project would be Their apprentices would make a life-size model and rough out the project in marble The master sculptor would add the final touches and details

Sculptures and statues Sculptors would make their statues colorful and detailed along with adding metal pieces to go along with the project The Greeks drew their inspiration from Egyptian statues by having the subjects facing front and arms at their sides

The statue of Athena The statue of Athena was located in the Parthenon and created by a man named Phidias He carved the faces of Pericles and himself into Athena’s shield Some people did not like this, but others claimed Phidias was the one person who had seen what Athena really looked like
