Technology Page 2 MECHANISMS A mechanism is a device that changes an input motion and force into a desired output motion and force. There will be occasions when a mechanism will be needed to be used to achieve a certain sort of movement – in a moving sign, a child's toy or in a complex board game perhaps. The diagram below shows the different types of movement that may be used in the required mechanism. Linear movement Reciprocal movement Oscillating movement Rotating movement All mechanisms can be categorised into four main groups.
