Pathways Pediatric Therapy provides the highest quality of therapy for children faced with the challenge of mastering sensory or developmental skills.

Pathways Pediatric Therapy We focus on each child’s unique abilities and create a program specialized to each individual. Our practice helps caregivers incorporate successful strategies in the home to allow continuity and the highest functionality in all areas of a child’s life.

Pathways Pediatric Therapy Our goal is to identify and create a treatment plan which incorporates each child’s preferred learning style and to develop a program optimal to each child in a fun and nurturing environment.

Pathways Pediatric Therapy Founded by Margaret Gokey, an Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Therapist, who developed California Hand Rehabilitation 17 years ago in Napa. Growing up, she struggled with dyslexia but did not get diagnosed until age 28.

Why do children need Occupational Therapy ? Children’s jobs are to: Play Eat Dress Socialize Learn Experience their environment

What we do Gross Motor Skills Fine Motor Skills Handwriting without Tears™ Oral Motor Motor Planning Coordination Social, Behavioral and Emotional Development Sensory Integration Therapy

Sensory Processing Disorder Disorganization in the nervous system regarding how sensory information is processed.

Sensory disorganization occurs when The brain does not receive the messages. The brain receives inconsistent messages. The brain receives mixed messages.

Touch High sensitivity Low sensitivity Hands are on everything Avoids messy play Dislikes tags or certain fabrics Dislikes grooming Low sensitivity Hands are on everything

Auditory Low sensitivity High sensitivity Not listening Distractible Covers ears Overwhelmed by loud noise Low sensitivity Not listening Slow to respond Turns the volume up too loud

Visual Low sensitivity High sensitivity Squints Distractible Avoids eye contact Loses track on page, and lining up problems Leads to poor math and reading skills Low sensitivity Appears not to notice environment

Oral Smell / Taste High sensitivity Low sensitivity Picky eater Gags easily Dislikes textures Low sensitivity Mouths items Over stuffs mouth Does not distinguish tastes or smells

Vestibular Balance / Motion High sensitivity Car sick Gravitational insecurity Fearful of heights at playground Sedentary Low sensitivity Fidgety On the go Constantly in motion

Proprioception Body Position High sensitivity (almost never) Low sensitivity Clumsy Bumps and pushes Poor posture Too much or too little pressure

Sensory Processing Disorder also affects Social skills Poor play skills Misread social cues Emotionally reactive Isolation

Sensory Processing Disorder also affects Specific motor skills Academics Handwriting

Sensory Processing Disorder also affects Motor Planning Clumsy or uncoordinated Misses developmental milestones Appears to be “Lazy”

Occupational Therapy provides sensory input to enhance or counteract how the nervous system processes information.

OT Treatment Includes Self Regulation Sensory Diet Work with Family Individual Skills Fine motor Gross motor Oral motor Body position and strength Handwriting

Without Sensory Integration Therapy The issues may become magnified as we grow older Avoidance Compensation Withdrawal from overwhelming activities. Interferes with daily life Increased reactivity and isolation.

Sensory Integration Therapy Reorganizes how the sensory information is being processed. With therapy, the child will grow up with a better understanding of their body and their brain. With therapy, the child will learn strategies and behavioral adaptations to become successful adults.
