Day 1 Video

mo·ti·va·tion  The reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.  The general desire or willingness of someone to do something. Synonyms motive - incentive - stimulus - impulse

1. Describe what you want your future to look like. 2. What qualities or actions will help make those desires a reality in your lives

Could the qualities/actions words describe your life right now at home, in your relationships, in your school work, etc?

Quotes: 1. “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis 2. “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” Confucius 3. “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Walt Disney 4. “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” – anonymous

5. “ Look upon the present as the past of your future.” – anonymous 6. “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. You see, success, doesn’t just suddenly occur one day in someone’s life. For that matter, neither does failure. Each is a process. Every day of your life is merely preparation for the next. What you become is the result of what you do today. In other words…”

7. “The question is, What are you preparing for? Are you grooming yourself for success or failure? As my father used to tell me when I was growing up, ‘You can pay now, and play later, or you can play now and pay later. But either way, you are going to pay.’ The idea was that you can play and take it easy and do what you want today, but if you do, your life will be harder later. However, if you work hard now, on the front end, then you will reap rewards in the future.” – john maxwell leadership coach 8. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Thomas A. Edison

Day 2

1. Take out a sheet of paper. 2. Brainstorm and come up with FIVE goals for your 8 th grade year. 3. Brainstorm TWO goals for social studies class. 4. Share that information with a new friend in your group when you hear the signal or teacher direction.

 Dear students, Welcome to the second day of Social Studies and middle school. I know that the first few days of a new class and school can feel overwhelming, and I understand that you may be feeling a slew of emotions today including excitement, nervousness, and uncertainty. Please understand that I have felt the same way many times when starting a new class, and it is natural. However, please also realize that while you may feel this way, I believe you came to RRMS to achieve great things, and one of my most important personal missions is to assist you in reaching your goals of doing well in school and in this class. I’m here for you! Please assist me in this task by assisting yourself. Ms.Yarborough

 You hold the key to your success, so I would like you to use your brainstorm list we completed in class and then, with that information, write a letter that outlines a plan for your future success in this class and in future rise towards higher education.  In doing so, please reflect upon the following topics and then NEATLY handwrite a full one page letter to yourself which explains in detail these issues:  What are my goals while in social studies class?  Why am I in school?  What do I hope to accomplish this year?  How will I accomplish these goals?  What do I hope to accomplish in this class and why?  How would I feel if I dropped this class or out of school altogether? Students proofread and sign it at the bottom of the letter. We will re-visit these letters at the end of the school year to see how you have progressed towards your goals. Letters may also be re-visited sooner is a student gets off of track academically or behaviorally.

Day 3

1. Use the strip of paper passed out sequence how you motivate yourself to do your work? Order these techniques from 1 (the best) to 7 (the worst). Motivation Activity Day 3 2. Share that information with a new friend in your group when you hear the signal or teacher direction.

1. Now watch the video: Video 2. After the video, you and your group will match the famous person with how they were put down and their achievement due to their motivational skills. 3. The group who finishes and has the matches correctly wins!

Day 4

1. In your warm up books, brainstorm what it takes to change the world. 2. Brainstorm and come up with FIVE ways you would change the world 3. Share that information with a new friend in your group when you hear the signal or teacher direction.

1. Now watch the video: Video 2. While watching the video write down the names of each famous person you can recognize. 3. The person who names the most people wins!

 1. What do you think this quote means: “With great power comes great responsibility.”  What motivates superheroes in movies and real superheroes in our world to make the world a better place?  3. What challenges do superheroes face? How do they overcome them?  4. If you had the power to change the world, how would you do it and what would you do. Use your creativity. [You can have super powers to get it done.]
