private branch exchange

Private branch exchange 1 A 'private branch exchange (PBX)' is a telephone exchange that serves a particular business or office, as opposed to one that a common carrier or telephone company operates for many businesses or for the general public. PBXs are also referred to as:

Private branch exchange - Key system 1 Key systems are primarily defined by individual line selection buttons for each connected phone line, a feature shared with hybrid systems. New installations of key systems have become less common, as hybrid systems and private branch exchanges of comparable size have similar cost and greater functionality.

PABX - Private branch exchange 1 A 'private branch exchange (PBX)' is a telephone exchange or switching system that serves a private organization and performs concentration of central office lines or trunks and provides intercommunication between a large number of telephone stations in the organization.ATT, Notes on the Network (1980) p.3 The central office lines provide connections to the public switched telephone network and the concentration aspect of a PBX permits the shared use of these lines between all stations in the organization
