Madagascar By Kady Mortenson

Geography Madagascar is in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It’s the fourth largest island and its 2 times the size of Arizona. The woods that were once there are no longer because they have been cut down. Map reference is Africa. Land boundaries are 0 km. Coastline is 4,828 Area: total: 587,041 sq km, land: 581,540 sq km, water: 5,501 sq km. Geographical coordinates are: 20 00 S, 47 00 E

Geography continued… The climate is tropical along coast, temperate inland, and arid in south. Terrain is narrow coastal plain, high plateau and mountains in the center. Natural resources are graphite, chromite, coal, bauxite, salt, quartz, tar sands, semiprecious stones, mica, fish, and hydropower. The amount of irrigated land is 10,860 sq km. Total renewable water sources are 337 cu km. Natural hazards are periodic cyclones, drought, and locust infestation. Current issues are soil erosion, desertification, surface water contaminated with raw sewage and other wastes, and several endangered species.

People The population is 20,653,556. The age structure is 0-14 years: 43.5% 15-64 years: 53.5 65 years and over: 3% The birth rate is 38.14 births/1,000 population. Transportation They have 89 airports. They have 854 km of railways. They have 65,663 km of road ways. They have 600 km of water ways as well. The ports and terminals are located in, Antsiranana, Mahajanga, Toamasina, and Toliara.

Climate and Conflict Madagascar is subtropical. Its hot and rainy between November and April Its cooler and dry between May and October. Every year, fires consume up to half of the island's vast grasslands and thousands of square kilometers of its rainforests and secondary brush
