Sinking in Concrete Day 3 – Deck piers

What you found out Mr. Johansen said the deck would go along the back porch from the great room and would span the 14 feet in front of the great room and extend 12 feet from the house. This means that you will need to install 6 deck piers He has already purchased 4x4 supports.

Materials For the deck piers, you are going to need different materials. You will now use ready mix concrete bags to pour into the holes and you will also need pre-formed tubes and post holders.

Pre-formed tubes need to be at least twice as wide as the support beam so we will need tubes that are 10” in diameter. The tubes are required to be 4’ under ground.

Calculate! The tubes are cylinders so we will need to calculate the volume of 1 tube and multiply the answer by 6 for the total volume. Then we will need one post holder for each tube. We will also need 6 pre-formed tubes.

First convert the inches to feet 10/12 =.83’ Radius = ½ diameter.83/2 =.415 Then use the volume formula! 2.16*6 = 13 cubic feet to fill

Cost it out! From # of 60lb bags for a 4 foot tube that is 10” is 5 6 * 5 = 30 bags!

Ready Mix TubesPost Holders How is it sold? 60lb bags 8’ long 10” diameter Individual How much does each unit cost? How many units do we need? 303 – (cut in half) 6 Total of each item: (row 2 times row 3) $179.70$34.11$17.82

Total Cost Ready Mix:$ Tubes: $34.11 Post Holders:$17.82 Total: $ tax (multiply by 1.13) = $261.74

Assignment Pass out copies of the assignment and go through it as a class. We will continue to work on more examples tomorrow but you can get started if you like!
