Spur Gears DIFFERENT TYPES OF GEARS What is a gear? A gear is a wheel with teeth that mesh together with other gears. Gears change the speed, torque (rot. force) and direction of rotating axles. Spur Gears This is the most “common” type of gear The gears interlock (mesh) to create movement.

Rack & pinion gear A rack and pinion is gears which convert rotational motion into linear motion. A circular gear called "the pinion" engages teeth on a linear "gear" bar called "the rack"

Bevel gears Bevel gears are spur gears that mesh at a 90 degree angle. The axles are perpendicular to one another.

WORM GEAR Worm gears makes very large gear ratios possible. In order for the spur gear to make one rotational movement, how many rotations must the worm gear make? This spur gear has 30 teeth. 30 rotations The worm gear is actually a gear with 1 tooth.
