Gender Aims To define what we mean by gender To analyse gender representation in TV drama

Gender Vs Sex NATURE VS NURTURE The widely held view that gender is the result of the nurture we receive as children is contrasted with the idea that gender is influenced with biological factors in our nature. NATURE VS NURTURE

What is Gender? Gender is a social construct it is not just biological. It is also an aspect of our demographic. Despite what we may think there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ man or woman. There is no ideal femininity or masculinity. There are many different types of masculinity and femininity.

Gender Stereotypes What are some of the gender stereotypes we would associate with men and women?. Women: Emotional irrational physically weaker Gossip Mature and responsible Maternal Domesticated Physically weaker Supportive and sensitive Men: Breadwinner Not in touch with their emotions- rational Obsessed by sport and sex. Physically stronger Immature Competitive Aggressive Ruthless

Gender Stereotypes and the Media What were some of the media products we identifies as being gender stereotyped? Top Gear ‘Sheila’s Wheels’ advert Power Rangers ‘The Fast and the Furious’. Bridget Jones’s Diary.

Gender and TV Gender representations and stereotyping is prevalent throughout the media. Why is TV influential in the formation of stereotypes? TV is the most accessible form of the media and has the widest ‘reach’. Therefore it can be responsible for perpetuating stereotypes. For example, perhaps our cultural stereotypes of northern working class women is drawn from ‘Coronation Street’ or ‘Shameless’ and not from our personal understanding of the culture or region . Task: Watch intro to Jekyll: What assumptions can we make about gender from it?.
