TOPICS Grammar: review and new Reading, comprehending, and interpreting advanced and authentic Latin poetry Roman Emperors: The Julio-Claudian and Flavian Emperors Poetic meters, especially dactylic hexameter Rhetorical/literary devices such as simile, metonymy, chiasmus, litotes, etc. Famous Latin phrases, abbreviations, and mottoes Roman coins

AUTHORS Aesop’s Fables (translated in Latin) - Approximately 100 tales from the “Tortoise and the Hare” to “The Fox And the Grapes” Catullus -Elegiac love poetry Martial - Witty and cutting epigrams

STANDARD VS. HONORS Success for all students Quizzes curved 10 points or use of charts for standard More challenging/longer assignments and more memorization for honors Differentiation

ASSESSMENT Quarters 1 and 4 QUIZZES 80% per quarter, including projects HOMEWORK 20% - ~ 20 assignments per quarter: translation, reading comprehension, handouts, mini “quizzes,” etc. - Online support via crabbylatin.com Quarters 2 and 3 - ~ 20 mini quizzes

QUIZ AND HOMEWORK POLICIES Homework Every student gets one homework drop per quarter Missed homework can be made up for half credit only within 5 school days from the originally assigned day. Quizzes Quizzes can be made up within 5 school days of getting the quiz back (NB: Latin III: 80 highest possible grade and Latin IV: 70 highest possible grade) Standard level gets one quiz drop

NATIONAL EXAMS Medusa Mythology Exam (March-April) - Medusa Mythology Exam (November-December) - “Hercules: the First Avenger.” All questions will include the life and adventures of Hercules. Classical National Etymology Exam (December) National Latin Exam (March) Connecticut Latin Exam (April) Why? To reward hard working/intelligent students To see how our students do nationally To reward student by letting them potentially drop the final exam for medal winners and quizzes for certificate winners

TRIPS & GET-TOGETHERS April Trip to England and Scotland Winter trip to Yale University Art Gallery to see their private coin collection Mother’s Day in Manhattan at the MET and Rockefeller Center. All family members welcome to come. Latin Day in Cheshire, CT in May Awards Breakfast in June
