Summary Sydney Carton and Barsad went into a separate room to discuss some matters. A suspicious Mr. Lorry observed how restless Jerry was and questioned what he was doing other than being a messenger for the bank Mr. Lorry then gets angry and accuses Jerry of using Tellson’s Bank as a cover to do unlawful things; Jerry doesn’t acknowledge or deny it. Jerry then tells Mr. Lorry that his son will work for him until he dies. He also reminds Mr. Lorry that he had just helped Carton against Barsad. When Mr. Lorry asks what Carton and Barsad discussed, Carton tells Mr. Lorry that all they did agreed on was to let them visit Darnay when he is in prison. He claims that it was all he could do without putting his life in danger Mr. Lorry then begins to cry and Carton comforts him by showing a different side of him. After that, Carton them asks Mr. Lorry to not tell Lucie about the meeting with Barsad and the arrangement.

Summary cont. Carton then gives off a grievous sigh when Mr. Lorry talks about Lucie and seems deep at thought. Then, they soon begin a deep conversation about life and talk about how much as passed. Carton then walks Mr. Lorry to Lucie’s house. He then met a little wood sawyer in front of La Force Prison and learns that 63 people died that day. He continues to walk along and stops underneath a lamp post to scribble down something on a piece of paper that he later gives to a chemist. When the chemist receives the paper he makes it clear that they should not be mixed together. He then takes a walk throughout the night and morning thinking about what was said at his fathers funeral. Lucie, Dr. Manette, Mrs. And Mr. Defarge, Darnay and Carton gathered at the court for Darnay’s trial. The prosecutor denounced Darnay as an enemy of the public and should be punished by death. He then goes on to say that Darnay has been denounced by Mrs. And Mr. Defarge and Dr. Manette Then Defarge goes off and tells the court that he found a letter in Dr. Manette’s old prison cell.

Connections Going back to Book the Second Chapter 6, Dr. Manette jumps up startled when he hears of the story of the letter that was found underneath a prison cell that the prisoner secretly wrote. In this chapter, it is revealed that Dr. Manette has also written a letter secretly while his time in prison. This letter might just reveal Dr. Manette’s true relationship with Darnay and his family.
