Video Famous Failures Tiger Woods on Working to Get Better Michael Jordan on Failing Play one or all of the videos by clicking on the link. If you are not able to play the videos, skip to the next slide. Microsoft, 2011

Quotes "I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half- hearted results.” "Success isn't something you chase. It is something you have to put forth the effort for constantly” Michael Jordan Photo By Jonathon Daniel/AllSport

Discussion What message is the famous failures video trying to send? What does the narrator mean by “If you’ve never failed, you’ve never lived?” What does Michael Jordan mean when he says, “I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half-hearted results.” Why does Tiger Woods go to the driving range right after winning or losing a tournament? How might these messages apply to school?

Objectives The people in these videos have a certain kind of mindset we’re going to learn more about. We’ll learn about the different kinds of mindsets, your mindset, and how to change your mindset.

Pre-Test What is a growth mindset? What is a fixed mindset? What is one strategy for developing your intelligence? First, let’s see what you know about mindsets!

Mindset Quiz Take the Quiz! Two types of Mindsets: Growth & Fixed What type of Mindset do you have? Take the Quiz! Distribute the mindset quiz and instruct students to complete the quiz. Microsoft, 2011

Mindset Results More “yes” responses on even-numbered items demonstrates a growth mindset. More “yes” responses on odd-numbered items demonstrates a fixed mindset. If the results are close, it’s likely that the mindset is closer to a fixed mindset.

Definitions Fixed mindset: Growth mindset: Belief that your intelligence and abilities cannot be changed. Fear making mistakes. Always trying to prove yourself. Growth mindset: Belief that your abilities and intelligence can change through effort and learning. View mistakes as learning opportunities. Learning for yourself, not for anyone else.

Discussion What kind of mindset do you think Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Thomas Edison, and Albert Einstein have? Why? Was anyone surprised by their results? What do the results mean? What can you do about what you learned?

You Can Change Your Intelligence! So how can we change our intelligence/ability? How do Tiger or Michael develop their talent? Discuss with students. Suggestions are on the next slide.

Discussion So how can we change our intelligence/ability? How do Tiger or Michael develop their talent?

Discussion So how can we change our intelligence/ability? How do Tiger or Michael develop their talent? Effort! They are constantly putting forth effort to improve their abilities. Learning from mistakes – they make mistakes or fail and learn from those mistakes and failures. Persist – they don’t give up!

Think-Pair-Share What are some examples of when you’ve worked to change your ability? How can we change our intelligence? How might having a growth mindset impact our learning in school? How should we approach assignments or class work if we are trying to develop our intelligence? Students reflect on their own, then pair up and discuss, and then chare out with the class What are some examples of when you’ve worked to change your ability? Examples: sports, music, art, learning to walk, learning to ride a bike, etc. How can we change our intelligence Ideas: We can push ourselves to learn new things. We can keep putting forth our full effort, knowing that we’ll experience more success if we do. We cannot be afraid of making mistakes, but instead, make them and learn from them. How might having a growth mindset impact our learning in school? Examples: we might try harder, not be afraid of mistakes, try again when we fail, work to make sure we learn the material not just aim for a certain grade. How should we approach assignments or class work if we are trying to develop our intelligence? See them as learning opportunities. Realize that even if it’s hard, if we put enough effort forth, we can finish the task and learn from it. Not be afraid of making mistakes.

Post-Test What is a growth mindset? What is a fixed mindset? What is one strategy for developing your intelligence?

Review Fixed mindset: Belief that your intelligence and abilities cannot be changed. Growth mindset: Belief that your abilities and intelligence can change through effort and learning. What strategies are some examples of strategies for developing your intelligence? For the third point, ask students for their responses.
