History In 1762 and 1763 Catherine the Great called Germans and others to come and settle on Volga banks. Beginning of 20-th century: 190 settlements with inhabitants. In Soviet years the autonomous republic was established, then abolished in 1941, Germans were resettled to the east of the country.
Natural features Saratov area is the only one in Russia combining three natural zones: forests, steppes and semidezerts. Khvalynsk national park.
