Male and Female Reproductive Anatomy By:

The Vagina The vagina is a tube-like organ that connects the uterus to the outside of the body. The birth of a baby follows its path.

The Uterus Also called the womb. The uterus is a hollow pear shaped organ. It has a muscular wall and lining. The uterus expands many times during pregnancy to hold the fetus.

The Ovaries The ovaries are located in the left and right abdomen. Ovaries produce eggs as well as hormones like estrogen progesterone.

Fallopian Tubes The fallopian tubes are thin, soft tubes that extend from the uterus to the ovaries. During ovulation, an ovary releases an egg into the fallopian tube next to it.

The Cervix The lower portion of the uterus that opens into the vagina. During labor, the cervix expands to about 4 inches in diameter.

The Urethra The urethra is the tube-like structure that carries the urine out of the body.

Labia Minora The 2 inner flaps of tissue, just inside the labia majora that surrounds the opening of the vagina.

Labia Majora The 2 outer flaps that surround the labia minora and the vagina.

The Clitoris The clitoris is the small sensory organ located just above the vagina.

The Penis The penis is made up of 2 parts. The shaft which is the main part and the glans sometimes called the head. The penis delivers sperm through the urethra into the female reproductive tract.

The Testicles There are 2 testicles. Also called testes. The testicles produce sperm.

Epididymis Located next to each testicle. Is a tightly coiled tube where the sperm is stored. From the epididymis the sperm is transported to the vas deferens.

The Vas Deferens Also called the ductus deferens. Thin muscular tube that transports sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.

Prostate Gland The prostate gland is walnut-sized. It surrounds a portion of the urethra and produces some of the fluids in semen.

The Urethra Just like in females the urethra is the tube-like structure that carries the urine out of the body.

Seminal Vesicle Is located at the base of the bladder. There are 2 seminal vesicles. The seminal vesicles secrete a thick fluid that nourishes the sperm.

The Scrotum Also called the scrotal sac. The scrotum contains the testicles and epididymis and hangs under the penis.

The Bladder The bladder is the muscular sac that stores the urine until it is released through the urethra.
