Menstrual Hygiene Research Primary Secondary Participatory -INTERACTION THROUGH THE “DRAWING BY PARTICIPANT” Online Research – Research tools TOOL-creating a friendly Visited websites and got an 1- Persona Story Reading environment & getting overview about menstrual hygiene2-Questionnaire them to open up and different products available and their uses etc. VISITING THE DOCTORS CONCLUSION

-Government High School ( near to yelahanka Police station) -Government Urdu Higher Primary School -Government Girls High School (Devanhalli) -Government Primary School (Yelahanka Old Town) -Government High School and P.U College (near N.E.S)

Conclusion - Have basic sense of general hygiene - Need to be educated about the necessity of health care(visiting a doctor) - Create awareness through a teaching aid or a system - They don’t have proper water and disposal facilities -Their parents and teachers need to be educated about menstrual hygiene so that they can impart their knowledge and understanding to their children.

 After a detailed research on “Menstrual Hygiene” and consciously noticing the issues related to this topic in government schools in rural and urban areas, we have decided to work on creating awareness through a teaching aid or a product that would visually (considering the language constraints) explain the need of Menstrual Hygiene, which can be used effectively in any government school space. It is necessary to educate adolescent girls in such an area as it is something they need to be aware of, also keeping in mind that they can possibly pass on their learning and awareness to their children.

As per our research we found out that there is a very low awareness among government school girls ( age 13-15) about menstruation and hygiene related to it. We plan to make a teaching aid which will be used mainly to teach these girls in the school. What should the teaching tool have? After talking to teachers, doctors, community health worker and with our own research we decided on Some of the following key elements for the teaching tool. 1-It should be private and personal and not a public teaching material like a chart etc. 2-Should be in simple language and preferably in Urdu and kanadda for better understanding. 3-Better to make attractive illustrations which relates to the user. 4-It should give an awareness about what is menstrual cycle, hygiene, exercise and nutrition related to it and also about taking medical help when needed. 5-Should not be too lengthy and boring. 6-Should be interactive.

Brochure Hand Book Flip Book Cards

Washing Hands Change cloth or pad after 6-8 hrs Take bath Washing used cloth and drying nicely These are some of the rough examples of the cards. These will have little text at the back. They can be used to teach by showing each card and explaining about it.

This is the cover page of the flip book. This flip book is about a girl named Manju who discovers what is menstruation. The story was such that it can relate with the government school girls of age Following are a few rough sketches of the flip book.

We thought of a handbook too- Sending a pdf along with this presentation. Please have a look. CONTENT In all the ideas (the 4 concepts mentioned) we thought of the content being simple, illustrative, & casual. In a form of a story, we could have a character playing a role and can also involve the anatomy briefly, the need for nutrition & exercise, general and menstrual hygiene, “feel good” factor etc.
