BIOTIC FACTORS IN THE ENVIRONMENT Characterisitics of Living Things Levels of Organization

Biotic Factors The living things in the environment. Ex: plants and animals.

6 CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS Describes all living things

1. Has Cells 1 or more cells Surrounded by membrane for protection Perform specialized tasks

2. Reproduces How the organism produces young or offspring

3. Has DNA Proteins Provides directions for cell to do certain things

4. Sense and Respond to Change Stimulus Chemical, light, sound, taste Homeostasis- tendency to keep balance

5. Grows and Develops Single celled- gets bigger Multi cell- grows more cells

6. Uses Energy Metabolism Make food, break down food Move things in and out of cells Build new cells

ORGANIZATION OF LIVING THINGS Hierarchy How things are tiered

1. Organism Any living thing Gets what it needs from the ENVIRONMENT Environment that provides these needs is the HABITAT

Species Group of organisms that are physically similar to each other and can successfully reproduce Ex: chinaback fiddler crab vs a mud fiddler crab

2. Population All the members of one species that lives in the same place at the same time. SAME SPECIES!!!!

3. Community All of the populations of different species that live in the same place (all biotic factors). DIFFERENT SPECIES!!! Interact, use same resources

4. Ecosystem All of the biotic and abiotic factors in a particular area.!!

5. Biosphere All of the ecosystems on Earth where life is found (crust, water, and atmosphere).

1- Which level has the most different kinds of individuals? 2- What do the organisms in the community have in common?

Let’s use what you learned: 1. Levels of Organization: **color the diagram we just made on pg Graphic Organizer for Characterisitics of Life- (finish this please) pg 14.5 between the KQ and notes) 3. Fill in the Blank- CPO pages Coach Lesson 1 Questions
