Mechanical, Sound, Light, Heat, & Electrical Forms of Energy Mechanical, Sound, Light, Heat, & Electrical

Mechanical Energy Mechanical Energy is the energy in an object due to it’s movement. Mechanical Energy can be Kinetic or Potential

Kinetic Energy Kinetic Energy is energy that comes from movement. A ball flying through the air has mechanical kinetic energy.

Potential Energy Potential Energy is the energy that is stores. A yoyo has potential energy. Once you pull the string the yoyo will begin moving. This movement will become kinetic energy.

Sound Energy Sound is created when an object vibrates. The object vibrates and pushes the air molecules nearby which travel as sound

Sound Energy We can hear someone speak because of the effects of sound energy. The sound vibrates off of our ear drum and allows us to hear the sound.

Sound Energy Sound energy requires objects that allow for vibrations. Some examples are air and water. (Sound will vibrate off of air and water) That is why sound does not travel in space. Space does not have air or water for the sound to vibrate.

Heat/Thermal Energy Temperature is really the measure of how much heat or thermal energy an object has. The higher the temperature of an object the faster the molecules are moving to heat up the object.

Heat/Thermal Energy A fire, a hot cup of coffee, or a heating stove are all types of heat or thermal energy. A stove heats the air inside the oven. When you place the cake batter inside the oven to cook the heat or thermal energy is transferred to the cake batter and it begins to cook.

Electrical Energy Electrical Energy is caused when a atoms are allowed to move along a path. The atoms will travel along a path call a circuit. A circuit is the path of an electrical current. THIS PATH MUST BE CLOSED FOR ELECTRICITY TO FLOW.

Electrical Energy When we turn on a light we are putting the circuit back together. It’s as if we have reconnected all the pieces to allow for a continuous flow.

Electrical Energy Electricity will not flow if there is a break in the circuit. Materials that allow for electricity to flow easily are called conductors. Materials that do not allow for electricity to flow easily are called insulators.
