In January 1919, the Allied nations met at Versailles, France to discuss peace keeping after the war. Faced many problems: Who should pay for the war? How much should they pay? Should a peace-keeping organization be created?

Many people believed that Germany started the war, so they should bear the entire cost. Some countries wanted concrete guarantees that Germany would never be able to threaten them again. The Allied Powers had to come up with a way to satisfy everyone.

In May of 1919, German representatives met with the Allied Powers to sign the Treaty of Versailles. Terms of the Treaty: Germany had to admit responsibility for the war, and pay all reparations. Restricted the German government. Large territories taken away from Germany. Established the League of Nations – an international peace keeping organization
