Earth – An Integrated Entity When we view Earth from space, we see a beautiful blue oasis set against the vast blackness. It causes us to realize its fragility and unity. By studying the components that comprise Earth, we are better able to understand how human and natural activities affect its delicate balance.

How is the Earth like a system? Geology - geosphere Astronomy – space and beyond Meteorology – atmosphere Oceanography – part of the hydrosphere Environmental Science - biosphere

What is the Earth’s structure? Is it round? Support your answer with three reasons. What are your ideas about the Earth?

Structure of the Earth The Earth is an oblate spheroid. It is composed of a number of different layers as determined by deep drilling and seismic evidence (Figure 10h- 1). These layers are:seismic The core which is approximately 7000 kilometers in diameter (3500 kilometers in radius) and is located at the Earth's center.core The mantle which surrounds the core and has a thickness of 2900 kilometers.mantle The crust floats on top of the mantle. It is composed of basalt rich oceanic crust and granitic rich continental crust.crustbasalt granitic
