ACT P RACTICE Reading

T EST F ORMAT You have 35 minutes to answer 40 questions. You will read several passages and answer multiple choice questions. The reading passages will cover these four topic areas: social studies, natural sciences, literary narrative or prose, and humanities.

I S THE ANSWER STATED OR IMPLIED ? Stated If the question directs you to look at a specific line, you will find the answer in that line. If the question has you look at a specific paragraph, the answer is in that paragraph. EX. In the first paragraph of the selection (lines 1- 4) the narrator compares the atmosphere of the courtroom to: A. A hot summer night. B. A cold February morning. C. A quiet classroom. D. A rioting crowd.

I S THE ANSWER STATED OR IMPLIED ? Implied Questions wanting an implied answer may have you interpret a word or phrase, make a prediction, evaluate a situation, or determine the main idea. EX. We can infer from the passage that which character was surprised by the verdict? A. Jem B. The narrator C. Atticus D. Reverend Sykes

R EMEMBER If they give you specific line or paragraph, match the choices given to something in that line or paragraph. If the question says “infer”, “what suggests”, or “summarize,” you need to pick the choice that best matches the intent of the passage.
