The Tavern Dinner was an authentic recreation of the food served in the mid-nineteenth century. It provided an evening of historic food and music at Carillon Historical Park on Saturday, October 1 from 5:45 - 9:45 PM

Carillon Park The opening orientation in the Education Building provided a background for the events. Following appetizers and cider, the DPS teachers were able to help prepare the dinner at the William Morris Home and cooked over indoor and outdoor fire places.

Carillon Park We noted that the actual dinner preparations began at 10:00 am. The many Carillon historians and guides took great care in providing authentic experiences.

Carillon Park One can only wonder how it was possible to actually cook from the cookbook, "The Tavern Dinner Receipts." Our ancestors who read the "Kentucky Housewife" must have been creative.

Carillon Park The Bill of Fare - Julienne soup, Stewed Beef and Gravy, whole wheat bread, butter, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, fall peas, buttered squash, pickled cucumbers, and beets were enjoyed.

Carillon Park In order for the staff to clear and serve dessert, we traveled a candle lit path to a dancing pavilion. It seemed that the DPS teachers were expert at dancing the Virginia Reel, a dance with origins in Ireland.

Carillon Park Following an hour of dancing we returned to Newcom Tavern for coffee and Bread Pudding in a whiskey sauce. Again our Carillon historians discussed the culture of the 1830s and answered many of our questions.

Carillon Park As often is the case, the evening was greatly enhanced by our own company, camaraderie, and good spirits. We all look forward to WOEA day, to field trips, to our trip/national Presentation to NCSS in Kansas City, to National History Day, and to our holiday banquet at Five Seasons Country Club.
