A PUBLIC COURSE Welcome to all from outside HÍ Attendance likely to vary each week Explain attendance list How to get the materials: Students’ needs – they will have precedence in second part

What you can expect from me Experience not diplomas ‘Global’ approach Concepts not theories Politics and ethics ‘In the now’ and forward-looking

Process Lecture (me or guest) max 50 mins, (less if more speakers) and Q+A Coffee break around 1430 Interactive/active session (instructions given week before + materials put on Uglan) Extra events??

THIE MISSING SESSION (Because of one week’s delay in starting) Will discuss in class next week: -how to fill the gap -- what topic (economic security or….)

MORE DETAILS FOR STUDENTS Points given: half for exam, half for essay Essay instructions on Ugla (Verkefni) by end- January To be handed in by 9 April Reading AND/OR research assignments before each session – some reading to be given later ‘Further reading’ list

USING UGLA LOVE IT OR HATE IT – there is no alternative! Kennsuáætlun = Course Programme Námsefni = reading material Verkefni = exercises and instructions (Sound recordings)

WHAT WE ARE UP AGAINST Course title combines two fields that are both new, big, difficult and sometimes controversial Debate in Iceland (+ Norden!) so far limited or tends to be fragmented What definitions, what limits? What values and principles?

SURVIVAL SUGGESTIONS We go a step at a time (even if sometimes in strange sequence) We realize we are cutting a path through jungle rather than covering the whole map We bear in mind that we may already know this stuff and be good at it, but under a different name We use real-life sources and cases whenever possible I get help from real experts inc. from Iceland We all try to stretch minds and keep them open

ANY QUESTIONS?
