St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School Sports Newsletter Autumn Term 2015 Unfortunately due to very wet weather in November the Year 5/6 football competition at Moorside had to postponed and a new date will be arranged in the next term. Lancaster & District School’s Football Trials Congratulations to Archie Bamforth and Emilio Brown both of Sycamore Class who were selected from St Bernadette’s School to go for football trials with 46 other children from various schools across the District to try out for the District team. Athletics In November, at Our Lady’s Catholic College, 8 children from Year 6 entered a Sportshall Athletics competition. The children competed in a range of track and field events that included team relays, obstacle courses, javelin throws, long jump etc. There were seven schools participating which is the largest number of entrants ever. After a fantastic afternoon the scores were close and St Bernadette’s received the bronze medal and were the highest placed Catholic School. The children represented our school with an excellent attitude and level of play. Thank you for the support from the parents that attended the event. Outdoor Pursuits Robinwood For three days in October, 38 children from Year 5/6 stayed at Robinwood., Alston, Cumbria. During their stay the children participated in numerous activities including caving, climbing and team games. They had a fantastic experience. Thank you to the teachers that also attended to supervise the children – Mr Findlay, Mrs White and Mrs Bramhall. Borwick Hall 16 children from Years 5/6 had the opportunity to have a full day at Borwick Hall, just outside Lancaster. They participated in various activities including canoeing, climbing and caving. Thank you to Miss Burke and Mrs Wood who participated in the events with the children. Swimming Gala The Lancaster University 5 th Annual Swimming Gala was held in November. 21 children from Willow Class represented St Bernadette’s. They participated in various events including canon race, seahorse race and more traditional swimming races. Eight large and small schools competed and St Bernadette’s did extremely well securing joint 5 th place. Well done children! Change 4 Life Most classes took part in Change 4 Life sessions run by students from students from University of Cumbria. These included team games and encouraged full participation by all children. School Sports Clubs Boys Football Club In September and October Mr Karim held a football club for the boys in Years 4, 5 and 6. It was extremely well attended. The boys learned new skills and played in match situations. Girls Football Club An after school football club was also run for the girls by Mr Karim and assisted by Mrs Bramhall. It was well attended with many of the girls taking the opportunity to play. The girls will have the opportunity in the future to take part in further competitions. Their enthusiasm was excellent. Tag Rugby Club Children in Years 3/4 attended a Tag Rugby Club for three weeks in November. This was led by Mr Brett-Smith (father of Oliver, Year 4), a qualified Rugby Coach from Vale of Lune, assisted by Mr Charnock-Payne (father of Malachi, Year 4). The club was very well attended by both boys and girls. We would like to say thank you as this club was well organised with lots of different activities to improve the children’s Tag Rugby skills. Both parents have said they would like to come back and run further clubs of this nature in the future. Netball Club Boys and Girls in Years 5/6 had the opportunity to attend a netball club during September and October. The club was run by Mrs Wood, Mrs White and Mrs Bramhall. The children further developed their skills and had the opportunity to practise in match situations. There will be more clubs arranged during the Spring Term. These will be for KS1 and KS2 children and more details will follow. KS2 Sports Leader Session and Coaching During November, the Year 6 children were part of a Sports Leader Session, delivered by Mr Lofthouse from OLCC. The session involved providing the children with the knowledge of what is required to be a good leader and practical skills of how to deliver a practical session to younger children. The children will continue to develop these skills over the Spring and Summer Terms. Mr Lofthouse also worked with Apple Class to develop their multi-skills using games appropriate to their ability. Willow Class attended University of Cumbria in November / December for activities run by Sports Coaches. This included football, team games and athletics.
