Overview of Presentation  Outline of Problem Statement  Background Material and Research  Summary product design specification  Design Alternatives  Future Work

Problem Statement  Design a system or tool to measure the quality of life for a patient suffering from movement disorders.  The system/device must provide evidence that the quality of life has improved post surgery so that insurance companies will continue to fund deep-brain stimulus rehabilitation.

Definition of Quality of Life  Quality of life is a measure of the means that people live within their own environments in ways that are best for them  The ultimate goal of deep brain stimulation surgery is to enable people to live quality lives -- lives that are both meaningful and enjoyed, but are also functional mentally, physically and socially.

Background Material and Research Movement Disorder Symptoms  Rigidity  Postural Instability  Tremor  Bradykinesia / akinesia Slowness Slowness Absence of movement Absence of movement  Dyskinesia Abnormal, involuntary movement Abnormal, involuntary movement Side effect of drug therapy Side effect of drug therapy No previous devices for objective measure of movement disorders found besides written questionnaires.

Main Aspects to our Problem  Mental  Physical  Social  Questionnaire  Depression Test  Reflective Gait Sensors  SHAPETAPE™  Accelerometer  GPS Full System  GPS Simplified System  Personal Journal

Product Design Specifications Performance Requirements Repeated use, all types of patients, non-invasive, easy to operate Safety Safe for patient and operator Accuracy and Reliability Dependable, durable, precise, fulfill companies requirements for objective measure Life in Service 7 days of operation and battery life, record tri-axial motion, 8 cycles per seconds (accelerometer) Quantity Can be reused, so just a few are needed Target Production Cost $ per unit Ergonomics Light, non-invasive Size Minimal, fitting watch or PDA (GPS) Weight Not more than 750 grams (accelerometer) Materials Hypo-allergenic for all types of patients

Physical Aspect  Gait Sensors +full range of motion --requires 3 video cameras --gathers too much information --difficult to interpret  SHAPETAPE™ +easy to use and set up +easy data manipulation --cost about $4,000 --not quite pliable enough --can’t gain access for preliminary testing

Physical Aspect Continued  Accelerometer  +small /non intrusive  +measures motion in 3D’s  +easy to manipulate data  +good for short range motion  --requires data manipulation

Physical Design Matrix Gait Sensors SHAPETAPE™Accelerometer Cost517 Ease of Use 2910 Weight/Size989 Intrusiveness768 Data Storage 448 Total272842

Social Aspect  GPS Tracking +able to determine where patient’s are traveling +observe long range motion +could notice increased activity +fairly easy to use +can reuse after each patient --patient needs to remember to have with them at all times --somewhat large, could be uncomfortable  Personal Journal +completely non-intrusive +can track activities pre and post operation --patient could forget to record daily activities --not completely objective, patient could record only on good or bad days Pairing Ideas together for optimal benefit.

Final Design and Future Work  Decide upon final product for each aspect  Integrate all products for final testing method Any Questions?
