CVFD Training – Public Relations SFFMA Training Objectives: –

Talking to Reporters Key Skill – Only say what you want a reporter to print, there is no “off the record” Preparing to talk to reporters: – Plan out key points you want to convey Prepare yourself to say it and shape your responses to include your points Talking to reporters: – Don’t “chat” with reporters Keep your conversations focused and professional Offer to reporters your quotes, as to get them correct – Attempt to never criticize other departments, state, or federal organizations Just say, “I wouldn’t really want to comment without knowing more about the situation or events that led them to making that decision.

Talking to reporters Know how long a quote from you they will use and don’t give them too much material – Newspapers will, at most, quote you for a few sentences – An in-depth interview may do more Play it safe and only say what you need to say

On scene interviews Newspapers like to photograph – Always be mindful of the angle and background Do not allow photographs that would violate HIPPA – Always wear a friendly smile

Public Relations Remember you are representing the Crosby Fire Department – Your personal agenda should not be expressed only report the facts Never violate HIPPA when conducting interviews Be mindful of your surroundings If you don’t know an answer, DON’T make one up
