Transactional Analysis Basic unit of Social interaction or When two person encounter each other they provide a stimulus and receive a response, that is termed as Transaction. Transactions, includes exchange of thoughts, feedings, intention, feed back etc.

Ego States PARENT : The taught way of Life. ADULT : The computer that CRITICAL NURTURING PARENT : The taught way of Life. ADULT ADULT : The computer that makes probability on the basis of reality. REBELLIOUS NATURAL ADAPTIVE CHILD : The felt way of Life.

Transactional Analysis TA is the method of analysing these transactions to identify which constituent of one self activates which constituent of other self. This awareness of a person can lead on to a more complete integration.

Types of TA (i) Structure Analysis (ii) Transactional Analysis (iii) Games Analysis (iv) Script Analysis

Parent Ego State (i) Consist of unquestioned recording made in early child hood. (ii) Messages received from elders around. (iii) Incorporates the behavioural pattern of the elders. (iv) Includes guidance, advice, prejudices & injections. (v) Taught self.

Nurturing Parent (i) When elders are sympathetic, protective and supportive. (ii) Don’t worry, it is going to be alright, you look good. (iii) Excessive dose makes a person solicitors.

Critical or Punitive Parents (i) Early recording are critical, judgmental or prejudicial. (ii) Person becomes critical, sneering and disapproving. (iii) Trying to find fault with anything and everything.

Child Ego State (i) Consists of child’s internal emotions and feeling in response to external events related to others. (ii) Manifests feelings of joy, frustration, abandonment. (iii) Felt self. (iv) Results in nail biting, laughing, giggling, sulking etc. (v) A person’s response in transaction is playful, manipulative, mean, selfish or affectionate.

Natural Child (i) Impulsive, untrained and expressive. (ii) Pleasure seeking, self centered an angry rebel. (iii) Such person could be insensitive to others feeling. (iv) As boss throw files and paper weights at others.

Little Professor (i) Intuitive, creative, manipulative. (ii) When little professor is dominant, he/she tends to be original, imaginative and creative. (iii) Refuses to toe the line.

Adult Ego State (i) Thought Self. (ii) Processes the data from parent & child and test it against reality to make decision. (iii) Relates to objective information, rational decision making, problem solving based on facts.

Stroking (i) Every infant needs warm and affectionate touch of others to develop into normal person. (ii) This non verbal cue to a child makes him feel that he is wanted and accepted. (iii) In TA language that is known as stroking. (iv) Lack of this touch may have retarded growth. (v) As you grow this changes into recognition.

Positive Stroking (i) An approving touch. (ii) Patting at the back. (iii) A greeting. (iv) Remark like well done or shabas. (v) An understanding look or even wink. (vi) Can serve as positive stroke. (vii) On the other hand disapproval expressed in any form will be negative stroking.

Note : If a person is denied requisite positive strokes, he seeks negative strokes deliberately, through antisocial acts like crime etc. Positive stroke gives OK feeling. Negative stroke gives NOT OK feeling.

Analysis of Transaction Types of Transactions : (1) Complementary or parallel transaction. (2) Crossed transaction. (3) Ulterior transaction. (4) Duplex transaction.
