School Safety Advisory Committee Topics in School Safety School Safety Advisory Committee As defined by the School Safety Advisory Committee, the term “school safety” refers to and includes the critical and necessary environment in which effective teaching and learning can take place. School safety supports student learning by creating and promoting a physically, emotionally, socially, and academically secure climate for students, staff, and visitors. Using the Internet or other mobile devices to send or post harmful or cruel text or images to bully others. Topics in School Safety Sexting Sexting is not a singular thing. It covers a range of possible actions and motivations. Let’s define the term: Sexting is online communication involving - youth produced sexually explicit or suggestive images - created and shared through the use of personal communication technologies. Finkelhor, et al, CACRC, UNH, 2011 NOTES NB: this definition is used for K-12 environments Comes from CACRC

Sexting Done for a number of reasons: Topics in School Safety Sexting Done for a number of reasons: - a 21st C: you-show-me-yours-I’ll-show-you-mine, - generating or maintaining romantic interest, - more malicious, criminal or abusive reasons: cyberbullying, threats, extortion, child pornography, etc. Sexting response requires clear policies & procedures, common sense, compassion and a known plan of action. NOTES - Not all sexting is cyberbullying

Topics in School Safety Gangs in Schools RCW 28A.600.455 (1) A student who is enrolled in a public school or an alternative school may be suspended or expelled if the student is a member of a gang and knowingly engages in gang activity on school grounds.      (2) "Gang" means a group which: (a) Consists of three or more persons; (b) has identifiable leadership; and (c) on an ongoing basis, regularly conspires and acts in concert mainly for criminal purposes. NOTES - Not a lot of ‘meat’ here
