Learning Targets You will learn how HSD: – responded to the Connecticut tragedy – reviewed and evaluated every aspect of school safety – provided ALICE and 4 E’s safety training to all employees

The District 32 schools – 3 high schools – 6 middle schools – 20 elementary schools – 3 early childhood centers Approximately 2400 employees 18,183 students 1441 teachers – 65.1% with advanced degrees

The District 23.9% Caucasian population 75.1% Minority population – 71.9% African American – 2.1% Hispanic – 1.1% Asian 57.8% Students eligible for free/reduced lunch 2.8% Dropout rate 92.8% Graduate and attend higher education

2014 APR District Highlights Four schools earned between 70% – 79% of the points Ten schools earned between 80% – 89% of the points Seven schools earned between 90% – 98.6% of the points *** Three schools earned 100% of the points *** District: 82.9%

Reestablished partnerships with law enforcement and fire officials Reviewed and evaluated every aspect of school safety Held three parent engagement forums Response to Connecticut

Safety Upgrades Dangerous Intruder Procedures School Emergency Operations Manual Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate (ALICE) Training

Safety Upgrades Conducted school safety audits Worked with local fire marshals for compliance with fire codes and safety

Process Recommended safety upgrades through a collaborative process with various departments, staff, students parents, police and fire officials

Priority 1 Safety Upgrades Interior classroom door numbering Exterior exit door numbering Interior exit door numbering Key fobs for teachers Classroom keys for substitute teachers

Priority 1 Safety Upgrades Window numbering Silent alarm system for intruders Remote locking device for The Learning Center doors Intruder lock door handles Keyless entry for exterior doors at the elementary schools

Budget for Priority 1 Items Total cost of Priority 1: $449,220 Safe Schools/Healthy Student Grant funded $24,547 Maintenance department budget funded $6,500

Budget for Priority 1 Items Capital project fund balances covered $418,677 Installation began in June, 2013

Safety Upgrades for Priority 2 Disaster Preparedness Kits for each teacher Silent alarm system for intruders for all buildings Cost to fund Priority 2 items - $20,139

Safety Upgrades for Priority 3 Items Modify and enhance existing Public Announcement (PA) System Interior and exterior cameras for elementary schools without cameras Exterior cameras for the seven elementary schools with interior cameras

Safety Upgrades for Priority 3 Items Keyless entry system for the middle schools and the early childhood centers Total cost for priority 3 is $2,194,264.
