How to make simple Graphs using Excel

Excel is a complicated program and there are multiple ways of performing certain tasks Right clicking the mouse is very useful Do not be afraid to try different things - go slow you may forget what you did Save often Ask the students

Three steps to graphing: 1.Enter the Data 2.Select the data and type of graph that you want 3.Fine tune the graph

Step 1 - Enter the data Enter data - Titles - Horizontal Data - Vertical Enter a clear title and make sure the data has clear units - eg. Population, Dollars, ‘000 etc.

Step 2 - Select the data and type of graph Look over your data and decide what graph you want to draw. Bar Graph - one value broken up into parts

Bar (Column) Graph - show magnitude

Line Graph - show changes over time

Scatter Graphs - Compare two sets of data

Stacked Bar Graph - Compare magnitude and change

Step 2 (continued)- Select the data and type of graph Highlight the data you want graphed (do not highlight the overall Title) Click on the Insert tab in the main menu and select the graph you want to create

Step 3 - Fine tune the graph Title, legend, Axis titles, colour, 3-D - all of these can be added later and fine tuned to just the way you like it. Use your left mouse button to select things and use your right mouse button to call up menus. Excel has many different types of graphs and ways of customizing the graph so do not get overwhelmed.

Your turn! - Let’s make a line graph
