Protect - what steps are needed to protect your digital content? Manage - what provisions are needed for long-term management? Provide - what considerations are there for long-term access?

Step 5: Manage What provisions are needed to sustain long-term management of preserved digital content?  Organization  Technology  Resources Three essentials:

Technology: Good software tools…  are written in a well-documented language  can be used on a wide variety of platforms  come with support from the creators/developers  are modular in design  support batch processing and workflows  come with licenses that support secondary use

Resources Funding for sustainability: a percentage of your budget or a percentage of your time

Steps Identify - what digital content do you have? Select - what portion of that content will be preserved? Store - what issues are there for long term storage? Protect - what steps are needed to protect your digital content? Manage - what provisions are needed for long-term management? Provide - what considerations are there for long-term access?

Step 6: Provide What considerations are there for long-term access to preserved digital content? Long-term access vs. Current access

Access to preserved digital content  Who is allowed to have access to content?  Are access policies equal for all content?  How are exceptions/special requests handled?  How do users request/get access?  What options (if any) do users have?

Qualities of effective preservation access  Delivery technology  Current  Reliable  Metadata  Accurate  Complete  Coherent presentation  Dissemination rules  Equitable  Consistent

That’s it! The End Any more questions?
