Energy Changes SWBAT explain what energy is; describe the forms energy takes; compare and contrast potential energy and kinetic energy
Get out your lab notebook: Title: Forms of Energy Think of all the things you do every day, such as walking to class, riding to school, switching on a light, cooking food, playing music, or stopping your bike. All of the actions of your daily life involve energy and changing energy from one form to another. Discuss in your group and record your answers in your lab notebook (in complete sentences): What forms can energy take? In what ways can energy change from one form to another?
Watch the demonstrations and record the following: Describe what is happening. What forms of energy are being used? How did the energy change from one form to another? Write a paragraph explaining why you think these changes occurred.
Energy Changes Energy the ability to cause change. What is an energy transformation? Energy transformations occur when energy is changed from one form to another. What are some examples of how energy is transformed? Chemical energy is stored in muscles and converts to motion energy when you move. The energy from sunlight is converted into heat energy inside a car.
Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy the energy an object has due to its motion. What 2 things affect kinetic energy? Mass Speed
Potential Energy Potential energy the energy that is stored because of an objects position. What is the law of conservation of energy? Energy is cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change forms. What other law did we study that was similar? The law of conservation of mass, and the law of conservation of matter.
