ACE STRATEGY ACE THOSE ANSWERS!!

ACE Strategy A…Answer the question C…Cite evidence from the text E…Explain your answer

ACE the Constructed Response A - Answer the question in a complete sentence. C - Cite evidence from the passage that supports your answer. E - Expand (explain) the answer – add more.

A stands for answer the question. Before answering the question, you should RESTATE the question that is asked… Example question: How did Jackie Robinson demonstrate the trait of perseverance?

The answer should first restate the question To restate the question we use the same words in the question to form a sentence. Example: How did Jackie Robinson demonstrate the trait of perseverance? Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by…

Answer After restating the question, you then add your answer. Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by not quitting the baseball team despite the discrimination he faced.

Cite evidence from the text that supports your answer. Write a SENTENCE (quote) from the story that supports your answer. You MUST put quotation marks around the citation because you are borrowing words from the author that are not your own.

Quote from the text: “At every game he had to put up with abuse from the stands. But something inside him would not let him give up.”

Explain (expand) your answer Explain how the evidence supports your answer. Jackie Robinson was able to break color barriers and become the first African-American to play in baseball's major leagues.

Strategies for expanding your answer. State an opinion about the passage Make an inference about something you read in the passage Point out a cause/effect situation in the passage. Make a conclusion about the passage.

Words to Use Begin middle sentences with transition words such as: first, second, for instance, on the other hand, then, now, however, afterward, before, finally. Start the last sentence with: in conclusion, as a result, consequently, or therefore.

Jackie Robinson demonstrated the trait of perseverance by not fighting back or quitting the team when faced with racism and discrimination. For instance, his coach said, “At every game he had to put up with abuse from the stands. But something inside him would not let him give up.” As a result, Jackie Robinson was able to break color barriers and become the first African-American to play in baseball's major leagues.

Let’s try it out!
