Health Care Facilities Health care is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the US Employs over 13 million workers in more than 200 careers Four billion dollar per day industry

Hospitals Vary in size and type of service provided Classified depending on the type of service provided General- treat wide range of conditions and age group, usually provide diagnostic, medical, surgical, and emergency services Specialty- care for certain conditions or age groups, burn, oncology, cancer, pediatric, psychiatric, womens Government- operated by state, federal, and local governments, veterans hospital, state psychiatric hospital, state rehabilitation centers University- provide services, research, education

Hospitals Classified by Funding Private or proprietary (operated for profit) usually by patient fees and or organization that provide financial support Religious- religious support and patient fee Nonprofit or voluntary- patient fees and donations Government- tax monies and or patient fees

Long Term Care Facilities Provide care for elderly, people with physical or mental disabilities, and individuals with chronic or long term illness Nursing homes or geriatric homes Usually for individuals who cannot care for themselves Provide skilled nursing care and rehabilitative services

Independent Living Facilities Individuals rent or purchase unit Receive services such as meals, housekeeping, laundry, transportation, and basic medical care Most are associated with nursing homes and skilled facilities to allow an individual to move readily from one level of care to the next level when health care needs change

Health Care Facilities Clinics- can refer to group of medical/dental doctors who share a facility and other personnel Hospice Agency- provide care for the terminally ill who have a life expectancy of six months or less. Called Palliative Care, or care that provides support and comfort Genetic Counseling- work with couples who are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant to check for genetic abnormalities and birth defects

Health Care Facilities Rehabilitation Center-provide care directed at helping patients with physical or mental disabilities obtain maximum self care and function Can include hospitals, clinics, private centers

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) Serve as health care delivery systems and offer types of health insurance Provide total health care directed toward preventive care for a fee that is usually fixed and prepaid Services include; examinations, hospitalization, education, May be operated by large industries, private organizations and use the services of other health care facilities

Industrial Health Care Center Located in large industries or companies Provide health care for employees Services include basic exams, emergency care, safety

School Health Services Found in schools and colleges Services provided are emergency care, sudden illness, speech, vision, counseling

Government Agencies Offered at international, national, state, and local levels Most are tax supported Some examples: WHO International agency sponsored by United Nations to compile statistics and information on disease, and to deal with serious health problems throughout the world

Government Unites States Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) Deals with health problems in the US Divisions 1. National Institutes of Health (NIH) does research on disease 2. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention studies causes, spread, and control of diseases in populations

Government Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates food and drug products sold to the public Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) establishes and enforces standards that protect workers from job related injuries and illnesses State and local health departments provide immunizations, inspections, communicable disease control,education
