Rectus Abdominus Action: flex lumbar portion of vertebral column

External Oblique Action: Unilateral: lateral flexion of the vertebral column; rotation of vertebral column to opposite side Bilateral: flexes vertebral column and compresses abdominal wall

Internal Oblique: Action: Unilateral: lateral flexion of the vertebral column; rotation of the vertebral column to opposite side. Bilateral: flexes vertebral column and compresses abdominal wall

Transverse Abdominus Action: Unilateral: lateral flexion of the vertebral column Bilateral: flexes vertebral column and compresses.

Lower Appendicular Skeleton Gluteus maximus Gluteus medius Sartorius Adductors longus Adductors magnus

Gluteus Maximus Actions: Extension and lateral rotation of hip (femur)

Gluteus Medius Actions: Abducts and medially rotates hip (femur); steadies pelvis

Sartorius Actions: Flexes, abducts and laterally rotates hip; flexes knee

Adductors longus Actions: Adduction of hip

Adductors magnus Actions: Adduction of hip

Rectus femoris: flexes hip (femur); extends knee

Vastus medialis: extends kneeVastus lateralis: extends knee

Gastrocnemius: plantar flexes ankle (foot); flexes knee

Soleus: plantar flexes ankle (foot); steadies leg when standing

Lower Appendicular muscles Xiaoyu Lu, Jonah Singer, Mike Granato (Group four)

Semimembranosus: extends hip (femur); flexes knee.

Semitendinosus: extends hip (femur); flexes knee.

Biceps femoris: flexes knee

Tibialis anterior : dorsiflexion and inversion of ankle (foot)
