And Timeline of European History

 Circa = around a given year.  Written as a lower case c.  Use like this:  The first evidence of the domestication of plants is from c BC  The first pyramid was built for the Pharaoh Djoser c BC.

TRADITIONAL  B.C. = Before Christ  A.D. = Anno Domini  The Year of our Lord  NOTE: There is no year zero!  After December 31 st, 1 B.C., the next day was January 1 st, 1 C.E.  These mean the same thing!  So, why do we have two ways to say it? CONTEMPORARY B.C.E. = Before Common Era C.E. = Common Era

 Gregorian Calendar (Christian):  Based on birth of Jesus (around 1 C.E., although…)  Current Year = 2012  New Year = January  Muslim Calendar:  Based on the year Muhammad arrived in Mecca (622)  Current Year = 1433  New Year = November 15, 2012

 Jewish Calendar:  Based on age of the world (according to the Torah)  Current Year = 5773  New Year (was) = September 17, 2012  Chinese Calendar:  Ancient. No certain origin.  Current Year = 4709 (or others, depending on calendar)  New Year = February 10, 2013

 A century = 100 years  We live in the 21 st Century…why?  The first century C.E. goes from year 1 to year 100. That’s the first 100 years of the Common Era.  The second century C.E. goes from year 101 to year 200. The second 100 years.  …and so forth

 Make two columns.  Write the correct years or correct century to match B.C.E 20 th Century 15 th Century 18 th Century 13 th Century 4 th Century B.C.E.
