P ERSONAL S AFETY Objective 1: Identify behaviors and strategies that enhance personal safety. Objective 2: Examine ways to avoid and reduce threatening situations. Objective 3: Discover strategies for safety at home and in the community.

P ROTECTIVE F ACTORS The key to personal safety is to be able to recognize potentially dangerous situations. Be aware of your surroundings Do not walk alone Stay away from dark or isolated areas Look alert and confident Did you know? You already have many assets that increase your chances of staying safe

S TRATEGIES FOR STAYING SAFE Protective Factors Behaviors you can practice to stay safe Smart Precautions Avoid unsafe areas (especially high crime rate areas) Do not carry your purse/wallet in easy-to-grab places Walk confidently, ALWAYS look like you know where you are going Avoid walking alone at night Park your car in well-lit areas Do not hitchhike Let someone know where you are going

B ODY LANGUAGE AND SELF - DEFENSE Body Language Non-verbal communication through gestures, facial expressions, behaviors and posture. Examples: Eye contact, strong voice, holding your head high Self-Defense Any strategy for protecting oneself from harm.
