There is another green area in Basilicata worth visiting. It is where the presence of two lakes of vulcanic origin makes the region even more characteristic.

The lakes are located in Mount Vulture and occupy the craters of an ancient volcano. While communicating with each other, the lakes have a different colours: the Small Lake has a greenish olive green colour while the Great Lake is dark blue.

The Small Lake has an area of ​​ 16 hectares and perimeter of 1800 m it has steep banks leading down to a depth of 38 m. The Great Lake has an area of ​​ 38 hectares and perimeter of 2700 m.

Both the lakes have the highest temperature of the lakes in Italy. Along the banks there are plants such as oaks and beech trees, water lilies. The lakes are surrounded by an exceptional green wood and it is particularly rich in chestnuts trees.
