Mohenjo-Daro One of two large cities of the Indus River Valley after 1700 B.C.E. that had well built homes and public buildings.

Aryans An ethnic group that migrated from what is now southern Russia and settled in India.

Sanskrit Language brought by Aryans that became classical language of India and Hinduism.

Hinduism Religion created by ancient people of India based on certain Aryan practices.

Vedas Aryan Hymns (religious songs) and religious beliefs written down. Means “Book of Knowledge.”

Caste An inherited social class.

Ashoka Emperor that unified the government of the Mauryan Empire.

Preview Civilizations began popping up in the Indus River Valley. The Harappan civilization lasted from 2,500 B.C.E. to 1700 B.C.E. Stretched from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and modern day Delhi, India. Used the rich soil around the Indus River for farming.
