Ysgol Bro Tawe Say NO to Bullying – Information for parents and pupils How to help at home: Your child will be learning about bullying at school Encourage and support them about the skills they learn at school Model non-bullying behaviour yourself and show respect to others How do I know if my child is being bullied: Behaviour changes Withdrawal Not wanting to go to school Lots of stomach-aches, headaches or non-specific illnesses Remember: Ailments are either real or made-up, but the worry is always there Worry must be taken seriously Talk to your children and use things like books, TV plots and puppets to open and continue discussions Agree with your child a plan of how to keep safe and how to avoid the bullies Give them a point of contact in school like their class teacher If your child is the bully: Stay calm They need to know that you support them, but not their behaviour Listen to all that they have to say See a teacher to agree a strategy for stopping it Focus on how they are making the other children feel Develop their confidence – happy children don’t bully others School Schools must by law have an anti-bullying policy Our policy states what we are doing to stop bullying It talks about what we will do if bullying is reported It ensures that children and adults understand what bullying means It demonstrates how bullies and the bullied feel It states that children must tell adults if they’re being bullied It encourages all children to feel good about themselves and each other School Schools must by law have an anti-bullying policy Our policy states what we are doing to stop bullying It talks about what we will do if bullying is reported It ensures that children and adults understand what bullying means It demonstrates how bullies and the bullied feel It states that children must tell adults if they’re being bullied It encourages all children to feel good about themselves and each other Why children bully: They want to be in with the ‘cool’ gang It feels like fun and the don’t realise how much it hurts They dislike or are jealous of someone It makes them feel powerful or respected It gives them things that they want like sweets or money They are bullied themselves and are taking their hurt or anger out on someone who won’t fight back They are having problems in their life that are making them feel bad Why children bully: They want to be in with the ‘cool’ gang It feels like fun and the don’t realise how much it hurts They dislike or are jealous of someone It makes them feel powerful or respected It gives them things that they want like sweets or money They are bullied themselves and are taking their hurt or anger out on someone who won’t fight back They are having problems in their life that are making them feel bad Remember: Children who regularly bully others at the age of 8 are five times more likely to end up in prison than those who don’t

Preventing bullying Definition of Bullying: Something that goes on for a while, or happens regularly Bullying is deliberate and the bully wants to hurt, humiliate or harm someone Bullying involves someone, or several people, who are stronger in some way than the person being bullied The person doing the bullying has more power The bully is often older, stronger and in a group Bullies can have a ‘hold’ over their target, like knowing a secret Definition of Bullying: Something that goes on for a while, or happens regularly Bullying is deliberate and the bully wants to hurt, humiliate or harm someone Bullying involves someone, or several people, who are stronger in some way than the person being bullied The person doing the bullying has more power The bully is often older, stronger and in a group Bullies can have a ‘hold’ over their target, like knowing a secret Bullying isn’t: A one off fight or argument A friend sometimes being nasty An argument with a friend Bullying isn’t: A one off fight or argument A friend sometimes being nasty An argument with a friend Cyber – Bullying Always ask before you send a picture or information that could be shared with other people You don’t know what others will do with your pictures or information Something that you think is a joke is upsetting for others when the world sees it Think before you send messages or texts. Messages and texts are easily shared Never give personal information out. Block people who send you nasty messages and texts. Treat your password like a toothbrush – don’t let anyone else use it! Report these people to an adult or service provider Never reply to a bullying message or text, but keep it as evidence. Children: Good strategies to remember if you’re bullied: Fogging: Remind yourself that the bully has said these things to others and what they say tells you more about them than you They want a reaction, so don’t react, to take away their satisfaction Imagine a great fog around you, which swallows up insults before they hurt you Reply using a normal, bored-sounding voice and say something neutral that diffuses any temper on their part Make sure that your body language, tone of voice and the words you use give the message that ‘you are not bothered about anything that the bully says or does’ Stick with these tactics because it probably won’t work the first time Why witnesses don’t tell: Witnesses worry that they will also become targets It is often not ‘cool’ to be seen as a tell tale It is hard to go against the crowd But, the more that children tell others about bullying, the less it happens Children need to tell, to feel safe in school Why witnesses don’t tell: Witnesses worry that they will also become targets It is often not ‘cool’ to be seen as a tell tale It is hard to go against the crowd But, the more that children tell others about bullying, the less it happens Children need to tell, to feel safe in school
