Presentation transcript:

Do Now 1. Mr. Murray was forcing it, when he took my phone this morning

What is it Subordinate Clause - A clause or phrase that contains a noun and a verb but cannot stand alone as a sentence. Ex. When the bell rings, it is time to go

Punctuating Subordinate Clause - When a subordinate clause is at the beginning of a sentence, it is marked with a comma -ex. While I’m at school, I learn about grammar.

Punctuating Subordinate Clauses - When a subordinate clause is at the end of a sentence it is not marked by a comma. - Ex. I learn about grammar while I am at school

Moving Subordinate Clauses Subordinate clauses can be moved from the front of the sentence to the back of a sentence and vise versa. ◦- Why? To add variety to our sentence structures.

Example I am going to get a job once school is over. Vs. Once school is over, I am going to get a job.

Review Are the following sentences punctuated correctly? 1. Since 2008 NBA prospects have been required to attend at least one year of college before entering the NBA draft. 2. Mr. Murray gets angry, when the Packers lose. 3 When the school year is over, I’m going to get a job.

Assignment - Begin the first stage of the writing process by planning a persuasive letter to a teacher or administrator at your school protesting one or more school rules you do not agree with. - Once you have finished planning your letter, you may begin drafting it.

Exit Ticket Write two sentence that includes the same subordinate clause. For the first sentence, include the clause at the beginning of the sentence, and for the second sentence include the clause at the end of the sentence.

Do Now I had never liked pork chops, but when I had my first rack of ribs I became a rib fiend.

Here is an example Mr. Murray, my English teacher, reminds me a lot of Jay-Z. - The phrase sectioned off by commas is the appositive.

Punctuation Practice The Wisconsin governor Scott Walker was in Madison for a meeting.

Punctuation Practice I am from Wisconsin the dairy state.

Exit Ticket Add an appositive to the following sentence: My friend got caught skipping school last week.

Don’t Cheat the Process Everyone has their own process for reaching a final writing product.

Planning - What do you want to accomplish? - Work backwards from that. - What do I need to do to accomplish my goal?

Drafting - Now that I know where I’m going, it’s time to start formulating sentences.

Editing - ACTUALLY READ IT! - DON’T CHEAT THE PROCESS! - Find global issues

Revising - Don’t be afraid to go back to the beginning

Publish Recreate a clean product you can be proud of.
