Genes are found on the chromosomes. Genes are always in pairs. Each chromosome has many gene pairs. Cell with chromosomes inside the nucleus Chromosomes are made DNA. A gene is a section of that DNA.

Purposes of Cell Division

Purposes of in HumansCellCell DivisionDivision fold cut

Purpose: Cell division for reproduction creates offspring with traits from both mother and father.

Called: MEIOSIS makes Why it’s important: If offspring are created, the species continues. If not, the species becomes extinct.

DAD offspring (reproduction) egg sperm ½ chromosomes from Mom ½ chromosomes from Dad MOM

Purpose: Cell division for growth and repair creates exact copies of a cell.

Why it’s important: Makes it possible for a living thing to grow; creates new cells to replace damaged or dead cells. Called: MITOSIS

Skin Cell exact copies (growth & repair) Skin Cell Chromosomes make copies Half go to each new cell
