Section 3.5 Solving Equations with Distribution on Both Sides Mr. Beltz & Mr. Sparks

Goal:  Solve equations that using distribution on both sides.

Basics Distribute on Both Sides First! Simply the expression (combine like terms) Goal: Get the variable to the left side Solve the Equation using Inverse Relationships Remember: You always want to solve for the Variable, “X = ?”

Practice Distribution 4 (1- x ) -2(x + 1) SHOW YOUR WORK

Answers 4 (1- x ) x -2(x + 1) -2x + -2

4 (1- x ) + 3x = -2(x + 1) 4 (1+ - x ) + 3x = -2(x + 1) x + 3x = -2x x = -2x x + 2x 4 + 1x = x = -6 Change Sub --> + Distribute on BOTH sides Simply the Equation Do the Inverse Relationship to get the Variables on the LEFT SIDE Do the Inverse of Addition [subtraction]

Practice Distribution -3 ( 4x + 1) 4 ( 2x – 6)

Answers -3 ( 4x + 1) -12 x ( 2x – 6) 4(2x + -6) 8x + -24

-3(4x + 1) + 6x =4(2x -6) -3(4x + 1) + 6x =4(2x + -6) -12x x = 8x x + -3 = 8x x = -8x -14x + -3 = = x = x = 3 /2 Change Sub --> + Distribute on BOTH sides Simply the Equation Do the Inverse Relationship to get the Variables on the LEFT SIDE Do the Inverse of Subtraction [Addition] Inverse of Mult. = Div
