Traditional Classroom A Traditional Classroom is a basic classroom with a typical set up. Seats are organized in a structured and rigid manner. Most, if not all traditional classrooms, have one person leading the class.

Self-Contained Classroom A self-contained classroom is one in which the students share similar academic requirements. Placement in a self-contained classroom means that your child will be removed from the general school population for all academic subjects to work in a small controlled setting with a special education teacher.

Inclusion Classroom In an inclusion class, children are placed in a regular classroom with his or her age peers. A special education teacher will often “push in” to assist those children with an IEP and will adjust the curriculum to that child’s abilities.

Resource Room In a resource room, small group instruction takes place with a special Education teacher who uses techniques and strategies that work efficiently with the special needs population. Resource rooms lack the structure and routine of a self-contained classroom.

ESL CLASS ESL is an acronym for English as a Second Language. It involves teaching most subjects in school through two different languages. The goal is to help students transition to mainstream English only classrooms as quickly as possible.

JUVENILE DETENTION Juvenile detention is also known as juvenile hall. It is a secure Residential facility for young people awaiting court hearings and/or placement in a long-term program. Most detention centers provide education, recreation, health assessment, counseling, and other Intervention services.

Collaborative teaching Collaborative teaching is when there are two teachers in a classroom providing support and instruction to the students and each other.

Homeschooling Homeschooling is the education of children at home. Normally, children are schooled at home by their parents or tutors. It is done under the supervision of correspondence schools or umbrella school. In some places, an approved curriculum is legally required if children are to be home schooled.

Alternative School Alternative is the name used in some parts of the world to describe an institution which provides alternative education. These schools have a special curriculum offering a more flexible program of study than a traditional school.

Vocational Education Vocational Education prepares learners for jobs that are based in manual or practical activities, traditionally non academic and totally related to a specific trade, occupation or vocation in which the learner participates.

GIFTED EDUCATION Gifted Education is also known as Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). Generally, students spend all class time with their peers but receive extra material to challenge them. In some cases, pupils are advanced to a higher-level class covering material more suited to their abilities and preparedness.
