Raymond Moore Katie Schwettmann

Little bit about me..  I have a wife Dorothy and three children, Dennis, Kathie, and Mari whom are all happily married with children of their own.  I used to be a teacher, then became a principle then from there became a superintendent of California Public Schools.  Completed my education at the University of Southern California where I received my PhD and then accepted the position of academic dean and president of several Seventh-day schools in the US, Japan, and the Philippines.  I got the opportunity to serve under General MacArthur’s staff during World War II.  After much schooling, the United States Office of Education invited me to be a higher education program officer.

How my journey began..  In 1972, California was considering a law to make school compulsory for children as young as two and a half years old.  The article I wrote about how absurd this was sending a child to school so young was published in Harper’s Newspaper. The article was soon republished by Reader’s Digest where it got very popular. From there, the editors requested a book from me. This point in my life was when I began writing my books on education.

Beginning my research..  As I worked in these high education programs, I began researching more about the effects of schooling on young children. This is when I changed my direction toward home schooling. My wife and I spent years working with courts to establish legal precedents for parents who wanted to home school their child.

Countries I have worked with courts in…  United States  South Africa  West Germany  Great Britain  Japan  Australia  New Zealand  Canada

 I believe that children need more individualized attention  Parents were sending their children to school at too young of an age  This is the reason I wrote the book Better Late than Early and The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook

About the books..  Better Late than Early: It summarizes research supporting my contention that children are not psychologically ready for formal learning until age eight to ten. I suggest that waiting allows children to gain the maturity and logical skills necessary for formal work and prevents them from becoming frustrated and discouraged by attempts to handle material they are simply not yet ready to understand.

Cont..  The Successful Homeschooling Family Handbook: Summarizes how to teach your child by using our home schooling system. My wife and I will show you how to make homeschooling an easy-to-live-with family adventure in learning. This low-stress, low-cost program shows you how to build a curriculum around your child's needs and interests - and around a realistic family schedule. Instead of a cut-and- dried approach, you'll discover the freedom of a flexible program that encourages creativity and support.

 My wife and I are strong believers in the educational principles of head, heart, and hand. My philosophy of balancing service, work, and study became known as the Moore Formula. 

To summarize the Moore Formula..  High success comes when close individual attention is paid to the needs of the student, following their interests and allowing them to mature at their own rate, with emphasis on work, and service with these non-academic learning opportunities receiving equal time to book learning. As the children learn to be diligent in their work application, it has been demonstrated that this diligence carries over into their academic performance as well as they mature.

 Because of the success, achievements, and positive feedback my wife and I have been receiving, we decided to open our own online schooling system called the Moore Academy. 

 Wife Dorothy suffered a stroke and passed away on February 22, 2005 at the age of 89. I (Raymond Moore) passed away July 12, 2007 at the age of 91.
