Your Body’s Balancing Act

Add to Table of Contents 10/1/13 What I Think About Homeostasis21 10/1/13 Homeostasis Notes22

Essential Question How does the human body maintain homeostasis?

Activity #1 Stand on one foot and try to balance. Do not use any furniture to help you.

Record Observations Record your observations – “The leg I was standing on was shaking.” – “My foot started to hurt.”

Activity #2 Measure your pulse for 15 seconds. Multiply this number by 4. Record this number in your notebook as “Resting Heart Rate = #”

Activity #2 Beside your desk, do as many jumping jack as you can within one minute. SAFETY: Make sure you have enough room and will not hit any one. Measure your pulse for 15 seconds. Multiply this number by 4. Record this number in your notebook as “Active Heart Rate = #)

Homeostasis Sheldon Cooper’s definition of homeostasis. Sheldon Cooper’s definition of homeostasis “A system’s ability to regulate its internal environment” In other words, homeostasis is how your body keeps its internal environment the same.

Internal Environment? Your body’s internal environment is: Temperature Amount of water/food Amount of Oxygen etc….

A Balancing Act Your body “balances” to keep everything the same inside.

Brainstorm Brainstorm ways that your body maintains its internal environment. Think about temperature, water, food, and oxygen. Write down your ideas.

Examples of Homeostasis Temperature: – Sweat to cool down – Shiver/goosebumps to warm up

Examples of Homeostasis Water: – Not enough water = thirsty – Too much water = bathroom

Examples of Homeostasis Oxygen – Not enough = breathing hard, high pulse rate

Ending Thought All of the systems in your body work together to maintain homeostasis.
