KICK OFF MEETING AL SALT JORDAN Capital of the homonym Province, Ragusa is situated in the south-east of Sicily, it counts around inhabitants and an area of km². It’s built on a wide limestone hill between two deep valleys, Cava San Leonardo and Cava Santa Domenica and it is listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. KICK OFF MEETING AL SALT JORDAN “Door to door” collection in the historic city centre starting in April 2008 and step by step is being extended to the rest of the city serving at the moment a population of about 30,000 people. 10,000 in Ragusa Ibla with ~ 50% of separate collection; 20,000 in the centre of Ragusa with a ~ 40% of separate collection.

KICK OFF MEETING AL SALT JORDAN In the rest of Ragusa Municipality, that counts 40,000 people, the collection is developed with the presence on the streets of containers coloured differently depending on the different type of waste material. The percentage of separate collection is about: In Ragusa Ibla - 50% In the urban area served by door to door collection – 40% In the rest of city – 12%.

KICK OFF MEETING AL SALT JORDAN Municipality collects the tax on municipal solid waste, based on the surface of the housing and commercial premises, but during the 2014 the Municipality is planning to renovate the waste management system, applying the PAYT (Pay as you Throw) for improving the quality of the separate waste and extending the door to door collection to all the city.

KICK OFF MEETING AL SALT JORDAN Main objective of the partner overcome the problems related to the door to door collection like the not observance of right procedures for separate collection especially elderly people, to the difficulties of business managers holiday period due to high numbers of tourists and proper difficulties of a winding urban structure.

KICK OFF MEETING AL SALT JORDAN Main objective of the partner implement pilot experiences for waste deposit and collection in the municipal area of Ragusa under the Municipality jurisdiction and involved population of Ragusa Ibla in the participation process.

KICK OFF MEETING AL SALT JORDAN Past experience of the partner Municipality of Ragusa was partner of the following project: Agriponic about “aeroponic” technology and support for building up the pilot green house in Tunisia. Agriponic Archaeoutur about touristic promotion of the archaeological heritage, through the identification of heritage trails and of the Archaeotur Integrated Tourist Route.
